I got a random job offer last week from a choir from Cape Town, South Africa to write a choral arrangement for them. I haven’t arranged choral music since college, and never really thought of myself as an arranger. But I think this was a reminder for me to embrace all that I am as a musician - songwriter, pianist, flautist, singer, arranger etc. - with years of training in classical music and theory and composition - and to be proud of that. In our jobs and beyond (beauty, intelligence, status, etc) I think we try so hard to fit the standard prototype. And when we don’t fit what the standard prototype is we feel ashamed and without worth. But I think the more we embrace who we really are, and not care about how we fit the mold, we will find ultimate freedom and contentment in just being who we authentically are.
